Master in Music 120 ECTS
Nordic Performance Master in Folk Music
In association with the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki (FI), the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music, Odense (DK), and the Ole Bull Academy (N), KMH is offering a joint Nordic folk music program leading to a Masters degree.
A joint Nordic folk music scene has begun to evolve during the past 20 years, with many folk musicians performing continuously in more than one country. Viewed in an international perspective, our similarities in the Nordic area outweigh our differences. This has made Nordic folk music a concept both in Europe and the in the USA.
This program gives you the opportunity of getting to know the folk music traditions of Finland, Denmark and Sweden, both practically and theoretically. The program focuses directly on the Nordic area as a single employment sector and opens the way to exciting cross-border co-operation.
The studies can include one-to-one lessons and artistic tutoring in the main subject, as well as tutoring in artistic development work, music production and participation in concert productions.
Together with your fellow-students, you spend one term at each music education establishment and give a joint graduation concert. (Extra travel and living expenses in connection with studies at the different institutions are subsidised.) This gives you a unique opportunity of drawing on each institution’s particular competence and potentialities in terms of teaching staff and milieu, and of developing your own artistic profile together with other folk musicians on a high level.
Before starting the program you must have taken a college of music B.A. comprising at least 180 ECTS, with emphasis on Swedish folk music or music from other cultures/world music, or acquired equivalent qualifications.
