Nordic Master Class in Orchestral Conducting, 9 hp

The course is intended for applicants studying orchestral conducting on advanced level (alternatively diploma/doctoral level) at the music colleges in the four Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Maximum six course participants can be admitted. National spread will be considered at the admittance. If there will be more than six applicants with equal formal qualifications, the course management will select participants due to the qualifications of the applicants.

Course content

• Own/indenpendent studies aiming to perform/conduct a concert with big orchestra with an audience

• Masterclass seminars illustrating and analyzing artistic leadership

• Tutored evaluation seminars where own and the other students’ work with the orchestra will analyzed and discussed

The course is arranged on advanced level and the participants should have graduated at least an artistic bachelor in music (entry requirements).

Concert May 27, 2010

Application
Together with your application (please, see entry requirements below) you should submit a minimum 10 minutes recording (video/DVD) from a rehearsal or a concert where you are conducting..

NB! Mark your video/DVD with your name and the course code KD 83702. Note that the video/DVD and other material are not returned. Further, KMH has no possibility to give any feedback on sent in material for applicants not qualifying for the course.

FORMALITIES

Aims

At the completion of the course, students should:

• show advanced knowledge in interpreting a work for symphony orchestra

• show good ability to direct rehearsals with a symphony orchestra

• on a high artistic level conduct a symphony orchestra before an audience

• be able to analyze and evaluate their own and others’ rehearsal work with a symphony orchestra

• be able to describe – from a conductors’ perspective – how to reach a high level of artistic expression with the various forms of work and other conditions connected to working with a symphony orchestra

Course content

The course content is the following:

• Own/independant studies

• Analyzing a current musical work

• Rehearsals with a symphony orchestra

• Tutored evaluation seminars

• Dress rehearsal and a concert before an audience

• Seminars on artistic leadership

The course language is English.

Literature / Material

The course management will decide the repertoire latest 1 month after the application deadline. The necessary sheet music/scores are provided for free to participating students.

Entry requirements (eligibility)

General (Swedish) entry requirements for higher education on advanced level (graduated bachelor) .

Selection: Priority will be given to applicants studying orchestral conducting on advanced level (alternatively on diploma/doctoral level) at music colleges in the four Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Maximum six course participants can be admitted. National spread will be considered at the admittance. If there will be more than six applicants with equal formal qualifications, the course management will select participants due to the qualifications of the applicants.

If the number of applicants are more than the maximum possible for admittance, the selection will be conducted due to the following priorities:

1. the applicants’ documented artistic qualifications within the main subject area of the course

2. national spread
