Ana Clemente - Free exploration and free play in music

Devising efficient exploration strategies is crucial for intelligent
organisms. In agreement with active inference and hierarchical predictive processing, the learning progress hypothesis posits that the brain, deemed a predictive machine, is intrinsically motivated to pursue activities in which predictions are improving, i.e., decreasing uncertainty and increasing learning.

Resembling behaviour at streaming platforms, we investigate intrinsic motivation in sampling and liking (tasks 1 and 3) and
in playing musical games (task 2).

The MUST motifs vary systematically in information content (a measure of surprisal) to configure the musical space in each task. We expect knowledge-based intrinsic motivation (to learn the space/corpus' structure and affordances) driving free exploration (tasks 1 and 3) and competence-based intrinsic motivation (to learn the musical style) in free play (task 2), predicted by information content and modulated by information- and music-related individual traits. Finally, we model the behavioural data through computational simulations.

Bio

A professional musician with an extensive career, Ana has successfully combined her artistic and scientific facets in a mutually enriching way. She holds a 2-year M. Mus. in Solo performance (Aufbaustudiengang Konzertexamen) at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf, Germany, an M.
Phil. in Art History (Diploma de Estudios Avanzados) at the University of La Laguna, and an M. Sci. in Human Evolution and Cognition at the University of the Balearic Islands, Spain. International bassoon soloist and conductor, she has worked with top figures such as Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich, and Berliner Philharmonic Wind Quintet, and recorded for
BBC Proms, EMI, Generalli, and RTVE, among others.

Ana has taught at several music colleges for more than a decade (e.g., Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears), also becoming Head of Department and member of the Advisory board and the International Relations Bureau at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias. She won various musical prizes (e.g., MAMC Award 2000, Young Performers Competition Price 2003, Youth in Concert), graduate scholarships, and fellowships from the most prestigious institutions (e.g., Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung; Fundación Caja Madrid; Fundación Ibermúsica; Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte; Asociación de Artistas, Intérpretes o Ejecutantes de España, AIE).

Her natural inquisitiveness and love for knowledge have led her to combine her expertise and a very active artistic praxis with her artistic-scientific passion, captured in the topic of her current Ph. D. research, Aesthetic Sensitivity. Currently, Ana is a La Caixa Doctoral Fellow (2017–2020) at the Human Evolution and Cognition Research Group (EvoCog), University of the Balearic Islands, Spain.

Since February 2020, she is an academic visitor at the Music Cognition Lab, School of Electronic
Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), Queen Mary University of London, UK (partially funded by Kungliga Musikaliska Akademin and Tobias Norlind Samfundet); and, since October 2020, also at the Department of Media Technology and Interaction Design, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden (Short Term Scientific Mission funded by NordicSMC).

KMH:s högre seminarium är forskningsseminarier för diskussion av aktuell forskning och aktuella forsknings- och pedagogikfrågor på KMH. Programmet läggs terminsvis och inbjudna gäster varvas med tematiska seminarier.

De högre seminarierna vänder sig i första hand till undervisande personal på KMH. Studenter, övrig personal och allmänhet som vill delta är välkomna i mån av plats, men ombeds kontakta Henrik Frisk i god tid, se nedan.
