AI & music: Then, Now & Tomorrow

The event has taken place

This concert is part of the MUSAiC Festival 2022

MUSAiC Festival 2022 (https://musaiclab.wordpress.com/musaic-festival-2022/ External link.), which explores impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on music, and beyond. How can one judge applications of AI to music and art? How do creative AI systems affect the use and worth of music and art? What creative possibilities are facilitated or hindered by AI and its statistical underpinnings? Where are music and art headed?

This concert showcases music from the application of AI to music, old and new. Two string quartets composed by computers will appear on stage together for the first time: The Illiac Suite (1957) and Music from EDSAC (1960). These will be complemented by two new string quartets, one by UK-based composer Emily Howard (https://www.emilyhoward.com/ External link.), and another synthesized entirely by a deep neural network. Other works on the program are: “Bias” by Artemi-Maria Gioti (https://www.artemigioti.com/ External link.) for AI and bass clarinet; and “Notes for a Future Self” by Oded Ben-Tal (https://obental.wixsite.com/main External link.) working in partnership with an AI system for small ensemble.
