Does KMH have PhD positions?
PhD positions at KMH are always offered in collaboration with another university, since KMH is not authorised to award doctoral degrees independently. This means that doctoral candidates conduct their research within KMH’s research environment while being formally admitted to the partner institution, the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts at Lund University.
In what fields of reseach can I do a PhD at KMH?
KMH is a one-faculty university in music and our fields of research is music and music education with possible specialisation towards:

- Composition, Conducting and Music theory.
How can I apply for a PhD position?
In Sweden, doctoral candidates are employed by their university. This means that PhD students receive a salary and other standard employment benefits. You can only apply for advertised PhD positions. Positions are announced irregularly, depending on available funding.
What qualifications do I need in order to apply?
Requirements vary per position, but in general you need a completed Master’s degree, or 240 ECTS credits, with at least 60 ECTS credits at the second-cycle level, commonly with a focus on music or music education. You must also meet any specific artistic or academic requirements listed in the advertised PhD position. Only applicants who match the qualifications in the specific call can be considered.
Is Swedish required to do a PhD at KMH?
Swedish is not always required for admission, as many research activities and collaborations take place in English. However, learning Swedish can be helpful for teaching duties and everyday life in Sweden. Please note that not all of our documents and information materials are available in English.
