George Kentros

About the Researcher

George Kentros is a violinist and artistic researcher at KMH, leading the Swedish Research Council-funded project "Back to the Future!". He also teaches in the international master’s program CoPeCo. Over the past 25 years, he has worked as a chamber musician, avant-garde club organizer, and festival director, primarily in the field of experimental music. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across North and Central America, Europe, Japan, and Oceania.

He has founded several experimental ensembles, including "Pärlor för svin" and "There are no more four seasons" (together with Mattias Petersson), as well as the recently formed sextet GAHLMM, where musicians from different experimental backgrounds, electronic, improvisational, and score-based, explore shared ways of making music.

In addition to his artistic work, George has taken on several cultural policy roles and has been a board member of the executive committee of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) since 2018.

Research Description

George’s collaboration with Mattias Petersson in "There are no more four seasons" sparked an interest in the ontology of musical works, leading to his current research project "Back to the Future!". In this project, he leads a research group that includes composer and musician Ida Lundén, pianist Rei Nakamura from Freiburg, and Mattias Petersson. Together, they take inspiration from historical musical works and apply techniques and theories from contemporary art, philosophy, and music research to discover new ways of hearing and performing these compositions.
