Johan Nyberg

Johan Nyberg is a senior lecturer in ensemble and didactics at KMH, conducting research focused on general education in relation to music didactics.

About the researcher

Johan Nyberg is a certified music teacher for both primary and upper secondary school, with over 20 years of professional experience, primarily within Sweden’s national upper secondary arts program, but also in municipal music schools and other independent music education settings.

In 2015, he earned his PhD from Luleå University of Technology/Music Education Department in Piteå, with a dissertation exploring how students and teachers in the arts program understand knowledge and learning in music.

He is active in several music research and education communities. Johan also serves as a peer reviewer for academic journals and coordinated KMH’s participation in ULF, a national initiative for practice-based educational research, during 2022–2024.

Alongside his academic position, Johan works as a professional musician, performing on electric and double bass in both personal projects and freelance engagements.

Research

Johan’s research centers on music education, particularly within upper secondary school. His work also reflects a broader interest in the societal mission of education, addressing themes such as democracy, organization, pedagogy, and cultural formation. In his current project, he investigates school leaders’ perspectives on practice-based research in relation to music teaching.
