This project in music education focuses on developing, testing, and evaluating models for music teaching in collaboration with schools and municipal music schools, with particular attention to students with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD).

Purpose and research questions

By combining a music-didactic focus with special educational and music therapeutic perspectives, the project seeks to develop an understanding of what accessible and meaningful music education can entail for students with NDD.

Central research questions:

1. What opportunities and challenges arise in the interaction between teachers and students in music education where NDD perspectives are central?
2. How can music education be designed to support participation and learning for students with NDD in schools and municipal music schools?

Method

The project is practice-oriented and takes place in collaboration with schools and municipal music schools. A central focus of the research is the students’ perspectives on music education.

The work is structured in three overarching phases:

1. Mapping and co-creation: focus groups and workshops with teachers, educators, and students to identify challenges and opportunities.
2. Development and trial: design and trial of teaching models in schools and municipal music schools.
3. Evaluation and analysis: observations, interviews, and documentation are analysed to identify key factors that can promote participation, accessibility, and learning processes.

Expected outcome

The research aims to contribute new knowledge regarding what accessible and meaningful music education can entail for students with NDD, as well as which factors influence how these students can engage in knowledge-developing music education.

About the PhD student

Jonatan Lindner is a licensed counsellor and music therapist with extensive experience working with individuals with NDD, particularly within habilitation and music therapeutic settings. In previous research, he developed the ”Mötas i Musik” model, a music therapeutic approach that fosters communication, participation, and connection through improvisation and attentive listening. In this doctoral project, he extends this work by investigating and further developing these perspectives within music educational teaching practices.
