This programme provides the best opportunities to develop your artistic expression and deepen your understanding of how music interacts with other media in dramatic and engaging storytelling.

Composing music for film involves collaboration with other film professionals. This requires strong musical, dramaturgical, and technical skills. Success depends on mastering a variety of musical styles as well as having a personal yet unpretentious artistic voice.

About the Programme

  • Designed for students with an interest in cinematic storytelling and extensive experience in music and sound technology.
  • Work on productions in collaboration with film students at Stockholm University of the Arts (SKH).
  • Courses are based on production and collaboration conditions that reflect real-world film work.

Collaboration with Stockholm University of the Arts

You will be a student at both KMH and SKH. The programme is divided between the two schools, with approximately half of your courses at each institution. Your degree will be awarded by KMH.

Learning through Authentic Productions

Throughout the programme, you will collaborate with fellow students and participate in productions together with SKH film students. These projects provide hands-on experience of professional workflows in the film industry, while helping you develop your creative process in a larger artistic and narrative context.

Courses to Develop Your Craft and Technical Skills

At KMH, the focus lies on film music composition and the interaction between music, image, and narrative. You will:

  • Compose music for smaller film projects in a series of advanced courses.
  • Explore different musical styles and strengthen your artistic voice.
  • Receive individual tutorials to refine your composition process.
  • Three advanced courses in film music composition, where you create music for smaller film projects.
  • Focus on the interaction between music and the film’s visual and narrative elements.
  • Develop your artistic voice and deepen your ability to reflect on your work.
  • Expand your knowledge of orchestration and recording strategies in the studio.
  • Gain practical experience in music editing, mixing, and synchronization in digital workstations.

Independent Master’s Project

  • A comprehensive course where you independently carry out an artistic project in film music composition.
  • The project runs in parallel with a corresponding course in film music production at SKH.
  • At SKH, you will also take courses in film storytelling, dramaturgy, film sound technology, and film music production exercises.

Authentic Production and Cooperation Situations

It is also a prerequisite that you have the ability to work in teams and can arrange your own creative process in a larger and more comprehensive artistic and narrative context. You will participate in the productions made by StDH's film students and the teaching will take place at StDH and KMH. This means that the courses are based on the authentic production and collaboration situations that characterise film work.

Admissions

Admission to this programme is every other year.

Before starting the studies on postgraduate level, you must have completed an undergraduate study programme of at least 180 ECTS, taken a B.A. in music or acquired corresponding qualifications in your speciality.

Please note that a strong proficiency in the Swedish language is required for this programme. For further information regarding admissions, please see the description of entrance examinations at the Swedish page External link..

After the Programme

Composing music for movies places high demands on musical, dramaturgical and technical knowledge. You will therefore learn to master a wide range of musical expressions, compositional techniques and styles - and also have a pronounced sense of musical dramatisation in interaction with other media to be well-equipped for future work life.

The former students of the programme are successful film music composers who work both nationally and internationally.

The programme also prepares for further studies at the artistic research level.
