Under the guidance of some of Sweden’s foremost teachers, who are also internationally acclaimed musicians, you will develop your musical expression, broaden your knowledge of historically informed performance practice, and investigate the early music field in a contemporary setting, drawing on research, source research, and other relevant materials.

About the programme

  • You will advance your skills on your main instrument or voice, specialising in repertoire from the Middle Ages through to the Classical period.
  • You will immerse yourself in an active musical life through collaborations, stage experience, and training designed to prepare you for both Swedish and international contexts.
  • You will expand your expertise through elective courses, ensemble work, and research-preparatory modules.

Strong focus on expression and tecnical skills

The programme reflects professional musical life, from solo performances to work in ensembles of varying size. You will gain extensive stage experience and artistic guidance that strengthens your personal profile and artistic identity.

During the programme you will further develop:

  • Your technical and instrumental proficiency on your main instrument
  • Your interpretation and communication, both in ensemble contexts and in front of an audience
  • Your stylistic awareness and expression among others through differentiated ornamentation, varied metres connected to musical forms and unequal temperaments

Artistic deepening, stylistic knowledge, and development

The programme equips you with the skills to pursue a career in both national and international contexts, with a strong focus on artistic development, stylistic awareness, personal growth, and an active exploration of music’s role in contemporary society. Admission is selective, ensuring an inspiring environment surrounded by ambitious, like-minded musicians.

Create, explore, and realise

Throughout the four semesters, your independent artistic work takes centre stage. You will have the opportunity to create, experiment with, and realise your own ideas, while further developing your practical artistic skills. Your work will culminate in an artistic presentation accompanied by a written reflective text, allowing you to analyse and document your creative process.

A potential path towards artistic research

The programme combines practical performance with theoretical deepening, giving you the opportunity to pursue artistic research. Through research-preparatory courses, you will gain the tools to continue on to doctoral-level studies.

In the Early Music profile, the focus is on instrumental performance and repertoire studies. At KMH, students can choose from the following Early Music instruments

Admissions

To be eligible for this programme, you need to

  • meet the general entry requirements for second-cycle courses and study programmes, meaning you must have completed an undergraduate study programme of at least 180 ECTS
  • meet the specific entry requirements which are
    • a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music (180 credits)
    • English 6
    • passed entrance examination.

If the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places, a selection will take place. Selection is based on results on entrance examination. You as an applicant are placed in a selection group according to the instrument you apply for.

All applicants who have submitted an application will be given the opportunity to do the first stage of the entrance examinations.

16–19 January 2026

An email is sent to the email address you entered on universityadmissions.se with instructions on how to submit your test to KMH including the link for uploading Test 1. See the test description for information on what to submit.

26 January 2026

9–18 February 2026

Results for Test 1 are sent via email. Passing applicants will receive an invitation and information about the next test.

7–15 March 2026

Entrance examinations during week 11 (and adjacent weekends).

15 April 2026

First notification of selection result. You must reply to keep your place or remain on the waiting list.

28 April 2026

After graduation

This programme opens doors to a rich and varied job market, where there is a strong demand for musicians in the early music field. You can work in a wide range of contexts, from established ensembles to freelance projects.

Many former students combine solo engagements with work in chamber music ensembles, baroque orchestras, or innovative interdisciplinary projects.

The programme also provides a solid foundation for further studies at the artistic research level, allowing you to develop as an independent musician in an international music scene that is constantly evolving.
