Entrance Tests for AIM – Artistic Interdisciplinary Master

When you apply to this programme, you need to take an entrance test. Here is everything you need to know to complete the test.

Test 1 - Submitted works and text presentation

The first test is digital and determines which applicants will be selected for the remaining tests.

In this test, you must prepare a presentation text and three works that represents your own work. You can apply to AIM regardless of your musical background. Therefore, the work samples you submit can be of a different nature. For example, they could be compositions, improvisations, sound installations, a performance, a performance of a composed piece of music or a video documenting artistic work.

Submission 1

The first submission should be a recording in which you have a leading role. Musicians and artists other than yourself can participate, but you must clearly indicate who is doing what.

Submission 2

The second submission should be a recording in which you participate with other musicians or artists. You must clearly indicate who is doing what.

Submission 3

The third submission should be a documentation of an artistic work (concert, installation, improvisation, etc.) that you have created in collaboration with one or more other authors. It is also possible to submit a work in which your music is part of a combination of other media, such as a film.

For the three works you submit you must clearly present the details of the recordings and name the other participants. You must also provide a brief description of the work process and the tools used in each of the three work samples. Audio files should be of MP3 type and should not be larger than 50 Mb, with a maximum length of 8 minutes. Video files must be of the type MP4 and must not exceed 100 Mb per file. The jury will judge mainly on sound, so make sure that the samples have good sound quality.

Text presentation

Write a text of maximum 700 words with a brief presentation of yourself: who you are, your musical and artistic background, areas of interest, previous training programmes that you have attended, etc., and a description of what motivates you to apply for AIM. You should also formulate a possible project to be carried out in the programme: describe its purpose, implementation and how it explores interdisciplinarity.

Assessment: The test is qualifying, and the result is evaluated on a pass (1) or fail (0) basis.

This test assesses your musical creativity in the work samples and your ability to describe musical visions in interdisciplinary projects in a project description.

The applicant is assessed in the subtest as demonstrating sufficient ability in artistic expression to be able to complete the programme.

Failed

The applicant is not deemed to demonstrate artistic ability at a sufficient level to be able to complete the programme.

The submitted works and the presentation text are also used as a basis for the selection assessment in the later test LS 24.3.

Your result will be notified by email. All passing applicants will proceed to the remaining tests.

Test 2 - Musical performance ability

The test is conducted on the KMH campus.

In this test, you will demonstrate your capacity for musical interpretation and artistic reflection. This includes how you relate to your current practice and, in the reflection element, the extent to which you can and want to go beyond your existing artistic framework. Based on an assignment given to you, you will, together with two musicians provided by KMH, prepare a short piece of music that includes improvisation. You will find out which instruments your fellow musicians play when you receive the assignment. You get 30 minutes on your own to prepare and 15 minutes with the musicians. The performance in the exam should last a maximum of 5 minutes. After the performance, you will orally present how you went about it and reflect on the result.

Test 3 - Artistic reflection and musical expression

This test is conducted as a conversation focusing on the artistic works you submitted and completed in the first subtest, LS 24.1. You are given the opportunity to develop your thoughts on how you create your music and how you work to develop a musical expression. You will also have the opportunity to describe why you are applying to AIM.

The test is conducted on the KMH campus.
